You Wanna Know: Will Services Like MaxMySpeed.com Help My Slow Computer?

In this segment of You Wanna Know, we discuss slow computers.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve received several questions about services that increase the speed of computers. Specifically, these questions concern the “As See On TV” commercials wherein they claim to make your computer run like new. Since this is not my area of expertise, I knew I had to present the question to the ultimate expert, Internet Tech Guy, Allen Dresser, and get his advice.

Q: Hey Internet Tech Guy, what are your thoughts on services such as MaxMySpeed.com when your computer is running slow?

A: Hello – from a brief search, I found many references to a couple of these “speed up my pc” sites as scams and not really useful. The one you mentioned is basically a registry cleaner and charges a lot of money for the “free” analysis.

Here are 3 things to try:

First, check disk space for free space and clean up temp files. Be careful and don’t delete needed files, but “Del *.tmp /s” from C:\ is usually safe.

Second , if you are getting a lot of popups in a browser, clean your browser history and cache and run Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes to clean up things.

Third, Make sure you have Anti-Virus program/s running. At minimum, use Microsoft’s free “Security Essentials” then layer on Avast, AVG, Kaspersky. I personally have found Security Essentials and Kaspersky co-exist peacefully. Norton and McAfee do not play well with others, though they are established players.

Bottom line – there are no shortcuts to speeding up a PC, start with the hard drive then the operating system and go from there.
Let me know if you need more info!

Thank you, Allen, for taking the time to answer one of our You Wanna Know questions. As usual, you were thorough and detailed in your response. For that, I cannot thank you enough!

If you have a question, please let us know. We may just feature it on “You Wanna Know“!

That’s it for now. I’ll see YOU around the Campus!
