Organizing Your Writing Projects For the New Year

In keeping with January’s topic of Optimal Organization, I’d like to share tips for organizing your writing projects. Every business owner communicates with clients and prospects through writing. We may write blogs, articles, ezines, emails, website content, ebooks, and other information products. Whew! That’s a lot of writing. As a business owner, you may not do all your own writing; you may have a VA, writing assistant, or ghostwriter to help out.

Obviously, with all the writing a business needs to do, you have to have some form of organization. I like to create lists and charts. Whether you use Excel, Word, or Google docs, start off this New Year with some method of organizing your writing projects.

Here’s what you’re going to have to organize:

  1. Which writing will I do and when?
  2. Who will be writing it?
  3. What are the topics?
  4. What are the timelines?
  5. What are the guidelines?

You can use this method to organize your blog, ezine, articles, emails, ebooks, etc. Here’s an example:

  1. I will write a monthly ezine to go out on the 5th of each month.
  2. I will have my VA write it and I will edit it.
  3. I will plan 12 topics for each month of the year to correspond to my home study course.
  4. I will get the draft from my VA on the 1st of each month and have it delivered on the 5th.
  5. I will use a template that has a header, welcome note, quote, short article, testimonial, offer, and contact information.

Does this make sense to you? I suggest you set up an Excel spreadsheet, Word doc, or Google doc for each writing project you have. Then put the timelines into your calendar and Voila! You’ve got your writing projects organized for the year ahead!
