It seems like the older I get the worse my grammar becomes. I’m not sure if it’s lack of concern or the fact that I’m constantly going in a hundred different directions that I don’t stop to re-read my thoughts. While I have access to several editors, the fear of the almighty red pen marking up my work puts me in a panic. All kidding aside, there are simply those times that I need to get the information out pronto. Because of this, I to to several website for the correct word, and here is one of the websites: http://lessons.englishgrammar101.com/EnglishGrammar101/Module6/Overview6.aspx
Experts say that the English language is one of the most difficult, so it’s not surprising that many folks stumble when using words the correct way. Here are some toublesome words that are often misused. See if you know the difference…no peaking…no Googling…and no professional editors…LOL!
accept vs except
advice vs advise
all together vs altogether
allude vs elude
can vs may (I’m guilty of this one!)
compliment vs complement
farther vs further
you and I vs you and me (yep, I’m guilty of this one too!)
are vs is

Don’t worry about the supposed distinctions between “can” and “may”. They’re invented 19th century distinctions (by an American usage writer) that contradict several centuries of actual usage (and the rules are pretty much unknown outside of the US, in Canada or the UK).
Similarly, the peevish distinction between “farther” and “further” are pretty much the wholesale invention of Frank Vizetelly in the early 20th century. The words were originally the same, and have been used close to identically, with some subtle differences, throughout their history. Just rely on your natural instinct, and you’ll be fine.
Thank you, Bob! I remember having a grammar teacher back in Junior High School that would pose the questions “I don’t know ‘can’ you?” when we would use the word incorrectly. I think it’s made me paranoid all these years. LOL!!
Loved your comment…thanks for stopping by!
