A Wannabe Work-at-Home Dad!

work at home dadHi this is Tommy. As I look back and reflect on yesterday and the meaning of father’s day, first I am fortunate that my father, affectionately known to all as “Paw Paw”, is still going strong at 86. For those of you who read “Wisdom of our Fathers”’ by Tim Russert, you know what kind of father I am talking about. If you have not read this book I encourage you to do so. It is all short stories of real life father and sibling stories that make you laugh and cry.

My father taught me to work hard and all I was owed was a paycheck at the end of the day. No special treatment just the satisfaction of a hard days work. It is amazing to me today when I interview a college grad the first question they want to know is when they will be a vice president. They want to know how much time will they be able to take off with pay of course, how many weeks of vacation, and anything else that we feel we are owed. I took me 15 years in the accounting industry to achieve that goal…

So, considering last Friday was WAH Fathers Day, it’s a good time to think in that direction. Work At Home Father’s Day is always observed on the Friday immediately before Father’s Day to honor fathers who have chosen to work from home in order to improve their family lives or job satisfaction. If you are a wannabe work@home dad, you’ll want to check out chief home officer to get moving in that direction.

From a personal standpoint that is why I decided to go back to school and get my Masters degree because I am going to be a WAH dad. In my work situation currently, I can do everything in the comfort of my home that I do at the office every day except for the face to face meetings that some of the old school still want to have.

Friday, watching the U. S. Open from Pebble Beach at home, a course that I have been fortunate to play only once ($495.00 green fee which my wife still believes was included in the room cost), convinced me this is the dream I will be progressively seeking over the next few months.

I enjoy working at home and it is my intention to open up my own consulting business after I receive my Master’s degree. So if anyone has any questions about social media or interactive technology, now is the time to ask because now all answers are free.  After August 7th, it will cost you by the hour…… the market is there for the “work at home executive” without a doubt.

The first thing as with any business you must have a plan and a goal of what you want to achieve. Just because you are not sitting in and office does not mean you do not put in the effort. Again it all ties back to productivity and what the Impact and Value will be. How much time you are willing to make this work. Just because you will have a “home office” the time will probably become twice as much but the results will be worth it.

Also, entrepreneurs “do it yourself” marketing will now be something that you will have to not only do monthly but at least a six month plan will have to be in place. While at the office someone has always done it for you, you now wear all of the hats of the departments you accessed.

That’s it for now.
